AI Inference Chip Leader Groq Secures $750 Million in Massive Funding, Valuation Doubles in One Year to $6.9 Billion

Abstract

AI chip startup Groq announced on September 17 that it has completed a new funding round of $750 million, bringing its post-money valuation to $6.9 billion. This round was led by Disruptive, with significant participation from key investors including BlackRock, Neuberger Berman, and Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners. This latest funding more than doubled Groq's valuation in just over a year, rising from $2.8 billion in August last year to $6.9 billion.

Financing Details and Investor Lineup

The $750 million funding round was led by Dallas-based growth investment firm Disruptive, which invested nearly $350 million in Groq. Participating investors also included BlackRock, Neuberger Berman, Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners, and a major West Coast US mutual fund management company.

Existing shareholders such as Samsung Electronics, Cisco Systems, D1 Capital, Altimeter, 1789 Capital, and Infinitum also continued their participation in this round. Notably, Disruptive has previously invested in well-known tech companies like Palantir, Airbnb, Spotify, Shield AI, Hims, Databricks, Stripe, and Slack.

Company Background and Technical Advantages

Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, Groq was established by former Google engineer Jonathan Ross. The company has developed an LPU (Language Processing Unit) inference engine specifically designed for real-time AI applications, offering low-latency, low-batch size solutions.

Groq's LPU chip excels in large model inference speed, capable of generating up to 500 tokens per second. This represents a performance improvement of over 10 times compared to ChatGPT-3.5's approximately 40 tokens per second. In terms of energy consumption, while NVIDIA GPUs require 10-30 joules to generate a token, Groq's LPU only needs 1-3 joules, consuming just one-tenth of the energy of NVIDIA GPUs.

Business Development and Market Expansion

Groq currently provides fast, cost-effective computing services to over 2 million developers and numerous Fortune 500 companies. The company is expanding globally, with data centers established in North America, Europe, and the Middle East.

In February this year, Groq also secured a $1.5 billion investment commitment from Saudi Arabia to expand the delivery of its advanced AI chips in the country. According to early media reports, the Saudi contract is expected to bring in approximately $500 million in revenue for the company this year.

Industry Background and Competitive Landscape

This funding round highlights strong investor interest in companies that are alleviating shortages in AI workload chips and computing power. Groq is one of many emerging chip companies seeking to benefit from the hundreds of billions of dollars being invested in AI infrastructure.

According to an IDC report, the AI chip market size is projected to reach approximately $110 billion by 2030. Currently, about 40% of AI chips are used for inference, and as AI applications mature and deploy at scale, AI inference demand is expected to increase to 60-80% of total computing demand.

Management Statements

Jonathan Ross, Groq Founder and CEO, stated: "Inference is defining this AI era, and we are building the American infrastructure to deliver inference at high speed and low cost."

Alex Davis, Disruptive Founder, Chairman, and CEO, commented: "As AI scales, the infrastructure behind it will be as important as the models themselves. Groq is building that foundation, and we are incredibly excited to partner with Jonathan and his team during this explosive growth phase."

Funding History Review

In August last year, Groq completed a $640 million Series D funding round led by Cisco Investments, Samsung Catalyst Fund, and BlackRock Private Equity Partners, at a valuation of $2.8 billion. Groq's cumulative funding has now exceeded $1 billion.

The White House recently issued an executive order promoting the export of the US AI tech stack, emphasizing the global deployment of US-origin AI technology, in which Groq is playing a core role.

This funding round further solidifies Groq's leading position in the AI inference infrastructure sector and reflects strong market demand for specialized AI chips and continued investor optimism for the field.
