I'm making an 8-page picture book about a small round robot called Pip who learns to grow a garden with an old gardener. I want to generate the pages with an AI image tool, but when I tried, Pip looked different on every page and the style kept changing. How do I keep Pip and the style consistent? Please give me a method and the prompts for the first three pages: (1) Pip finds a seed in a junkyard, (2) Pip meets the gardener, (3) Pip digs the first hole.
Skill: image-series-consistency

Keeping Pip and the style consistent

Perfect sameness isn't guaranteed with any tool. This method gets you close and tells you how to fix drift. Features like reference images and seeds vary by tool and change often, so check your tool's documentation for them.

1. Series plan

  • Purpose: 8-page picture book, children's audience
  • Characters: Pip (robot) and the old gardener
  • Recurring object: the seed
  • Settings: junkyard, then garden
  • Format: pick one aspect ratio now (e.g. landscape 4:3 or 3:2) and use it for every page. Leave empty space on one side of each image for the story text.

2. Frozen style sheet

Paste this unchanged at the start of every prompt:

STYLE: Children's picture-book illustration, soft gouache and colored-pencil look, gentle visible paper grain, soft rounded shapes with thin warm-brown outlines, muted warm palette of sage green, cream, dusty teal, terracotta and mustard yellow, soft golden morning light, simple uncluttered backgrounds, wide-shot or medium-shot framing, empty space on the left for text.

3. Frozen character and object sheets

PIP: Pip, a small round robot about the size of a beach ball. Body is a perfectly round dusty-teal metal ball with a few small rust-orange patches. Two big round glass eyes with a warm yellow glow and tiny white highlights. A small silver antenna on top with a mustard-yellow bulb tip. Two thin stick arms with little three-fingered clamp hands. A single round wheel under the body, no legs, no mouth. Curious, gentle posture, head tilted.

GARDENER: An old gardener, a kind elderly person with a round face, short white beard and rosy cheeks, wearing a wide straw hat, a mossy-green apron over a cream shirt, rolled-up sleeves and brown boots. Slightly stooped, warm smile, weathered gentle hands.

SEED: A single plump seed, pale gold with a small green sprout-line, about the size of Pip's hand.

Only include the sheets for characters who appear in that page. Avoid words like "cute" or "adorable", because the model interprets them differently each time.

4. Prompt blueprint

Every prompt follows this order: STYLE, then character sheet(s), then action and scene, then camera, then mood (only if it changes). Between neighboring pages, change only one or two of these.

5. Ready prompts for pages 1–3

Page 1: Pip finds a seed in a junkyard

Children's picture-book illustration, soft gouache and colored-pencil look, gentle visible paper grain, soft rounded shapes with thin warm-brown outlines, muted warm palette of sage green, cream, dusty teal, terracotta and mustard yellow, soft golden morning light, simple uncluttered backgrounds, wide-shot or medium-shot framing, empty space on the left for text. A single round wheel under the body, no legs, no mouth. Curious, gentle posture, head tilted. A single plump seed, pale gold with a small green sprout-line, about the size of Pip's hand. Scene: Pip rolls through a junkyard of rusty pipes, stacked tires and dented tin cans. Pip leans down and holds up the seed in one clamp hand, eyes glowing brighter with wonder. A tiny patch of light falls on the seed. Camera: medium-wide shot at Pip's eye level, Pip on the right third of the frame.

Scene: At the edge of the junkyard, where a small green garden gate stands open, the gardener crouches down to Pip's height. Pip holds out the seed with both clamp hands. The gardener smiles and points gently at it. Camera: medium-wide shot, both characters fully visible, Pip on the right and the gardener in the middle of the frame.

Scene: In a patch of bare brown soil, Pip digs a small round hole with both clamp hands, soil crumbs on its arms. The gardener stands behind, leaning on a wooden trowel and watching, smiling. The seed rests on a flat stone beside the hole. Camera: medium shot slightly from above, Pip in the foreground on the right third, gardener behind.

6. Workflow for your tool

  1. Make a keyframe first. Generate Pip alone on a plain cream background using only STYLE + PIP. Generate several and pick the best one. Save it as your reference.
  2. Use the keyframe as a reference if your tool supports character or style reference images, image-to-image, or seeds. Check its documentation for the exact feature name. Only use images you have the right to use.
  3. Do the same for the gardener.
  4. Keep settings fixed: same model and version, same aspect ratio, same resolution.
  5. Edit, don't regenerate, when only one detail is wrong (an extra finger, a wrong color).
  6. Generate pages in order, and add a previous page as a reference for style if your tool allows it.
  7. If your tool has no reference features, the frozen text blocks are your main defense, so paste them exactly, with no rewording.

7. Check list (lay all pages side by side)

  • Pip: body shape, teal color, antenna, eyes, one wheel, no mouth, size relative to the gardener
  • Gardener: hat, beard, apron, boots
  • Style: outline weight, paper grain, palette, light
  • Scale and perspective between pages
  • Seed: same color and size
  • Errors: hands, extra objects, stray text

8. Drift fix table

Drift Likely cause Fix
Pip's shape or color changes Character text reworded or shortened Restore the exact frozen text
Pip gets legs or a mouth Model fills in gaps Add "no legs, no mouth" (already in sheet); use the keyframe as a reference
Style shifts (e.g. glossy 3D) Scene text introduced style words Remove style words from the scene part
Palette wanders Palette described loosely Keep the five colors in the style sheet; add hex codes if you have them
Characters change size No scale cue Add "Pip is knee-high to the gardener" to the scene
Page looks different from the others Different ratio or model version Match settings to the earlier pages

Notes

  • If this book will be published, check your tool's terms on commercial use and any AI-disclosure requirements.
  • Send me the remaining five page ideas and I'll write them in the same format. If you tell me which tool you're using, I can adapt the workflow to it.

Real run in an isolated folder with only this skill installed. Only the Skill and Read tools were enabled, so no command was run and no file was written. The scenario is fictional. No image was generated: the model only wrote text prompts, so how well they work depends on the image tool you use. Whether a tool keeps a character consistent depends on that tool; the answer gives a method and tells the user to check the tool's documentation.
